                                      Prologue
It was impossible. Even as I began running toward them, I already knew that I'd never make it in time. They were too far away, and no matter how quickly I may have been able to move, I couldn't possibly make it in time to save him.
Fangs bared and fur bristled, he threw himself at the huge, terrifying lizard with a snarl of rage but was swiped away and off the towering cliff, and into the darkness below.
"No!" a scream echoed, and I knew it was my own. The blood was rushing in my veins and my throat closed up. Putting all my effort into it, every last bit of strength, I ran. I ran as fast as I could, straight at the dragon that swung its mighty, razor covered head toward me.
I was unable to think, only act. With a cry, even as the beasts head darted at me with its jaws agape, I plunged into the abyss. Teeth clamped on air, missing me by inches, and breathed flames as i was swallowed in the never-ending blackness.
Only one thing mattered and it wasn't the dragon. It wasn't what would happen to the friends hiding above, or the fact that I was plunging to her death right there.
It was him.
